FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. /Christian News/ — As the eyes of the world turn to South Africa for the World Cup, former Haitian national soccer team member, now Cleveland youth soccer coach, Ricardo Pierre-Louis will team-up with OneHope to host soccer clinics in some of Port-Au-Prince’s largest tent cities. Almost six months since Haiti was devastated by the earthquake, 400,000 people are estimated to be living in tent cities-more than half these are children with little to do during the day.
With a goal of helping kids be kids, OneHope’s clinics were designed by professional soccer coaches for varying age and skill levels and feature five different activity stations designed to build soccer skills and develop teamwork.
“I am thrilled to use my soccer skills to help provide this unique form of relief to encourage the children of Haiti,” said Cleveland Select coach and Haitian native, Ricardo Pierre-Louis.
For use specifically with children during the World Cup, OneHope designed Champions, a publication featuring stories of hope from famous soccer players, including Kaka and Eyong Enoh. Each child who attends a OneHope soccer clinic will receive a copy of Champions or a Creole-translated Book of Hope publication.
“Since our founding, we have distributed some 3.6 million copies of the Book of Hope to children in this poverty-stricken nation,” said Rob Hoskins, president of OneHope. “We hope to impress on the young people of Haiti that despite their tragic circumstances-God loves them.”
For more than 20 years, OneHope has been making the message of the Bible available in Creole and French to every child in Haiti in a way that addresses their unique cultural challenges.
Since its founding in 1987, OneHope has reached some 650 million young people in 125 countries with the message of the Bible through its Book of Hope publications and The GodMan animated film. Available at OneHope.net, the Book of Hope is an interactive, Bible-based children’s publication customized with culturally specific images, games, family activities and stories.
